Course Description The course provides a historical overview on the evolution of the concept of "museum" in modern and contemporary ages, starting from the mid-eighteenth century to the present day. Previous collections of ecclesiastical, aristocratic, private and scientific-nature world are recalled as fundamental for the birth of the "Museum" institution; gradually, its educational, representative, universalistic and ideological purposes, in Europe and in United States; the different types of museums, their relations with public and their recent transformations, both from a conceptual and architectural point of view. Particular attention is given to the Italian school of museography, from the postwar period of the last century to the present day, to the study of the interiors and temporary and permanent exhibitions, to the major personalities that, internationally, have contributed, in an original and innovative way, to the recent redefinition of the museum, its interior spaces, its relationship with the territory and its role in contemporary society.
