Course Description Historical hints on the nuclear industry, from military applications to commercial exploitation of nuclear energy. Reactor physics introduction: neutron moderation and characteristic parameters of the chain reaction, reactivity and control, neutronic feedbacks. Basic elements of nuclear systems. Thermal neutron reactors: graphite moderated, heavy water, pressurized and boiling light water reactors. Liquid metal, Fast neutron reactors. Innovative concepts. Nuclear fuel cycle: open and closed cycles, enrichment methods, fabrication, exhausted fuel treatment, waste confinement. Hints on design concerns. Nuclear power plant safety: principles and goals, deterministic and probabilistic approach, simulation and safety analysis approach. Nuclear system economics: electro-nuclear costs and present value method.
