Course Title HIGH INTENSITY LASERS FOR NUCLEAR AND PHYSICAL APPLICATIONS I+II
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester Annual course
Course Description This course aims at giving first rigorous and sound knowledge on laser and laser beam characteristics, with major attention to aspects related to high-intensity regime. Second the course presents the laser light amplification processes, and examines some significant examples of high energy systems with major attention to aspects related to applications, such as the inertial confinement nuclear fusion, the particle acceleration, the generation of secondary X and gamma source, the generation of XUV attosecond pulses. Topics (in summary): recall of electromagnetism; resonators and gaussian beams; absorption, spontaneous decay, stimulated emission of light; continuous and pulsed regimes of laser; active materials for high energy; amplification of pulses and non linear processes; high intensity laser systems; laser systems for the inertial confinement nuclear fusion; for particle accelerations and for the generation of secondary X and gamma beams; generation of XUV ultrashort pulses.
