Course Description This course provides a deep overview about the present and near/mid-future technologies for propulsion in transportation systems, with a specific reference to the overall balance of primary energy and of emissions. Main arguments are: emissions from internal combustion engines and methods for their abatement; hybrid and electric propulsion and energy storage in automotive industry; hydrogen and fuel cells, including hydrogen production and storage; biofuels and synthetic fuels; regulations, driving cycles and evaluation of real emissions; comparative evaluation of the energy and environmental issues in transportation systems, with particular mention to the greenhouse effect, for different scenarios of progressive diffusion of vehicle electrification and of 'smart' interaction with the electric grid.
