Course Description Errors in Numerical Processes: Stability and conditioning of numerical methods and algorithms. Numerical Solution of Linear Systems: Condition number and its influence on errors propagation. Direct methods: Gaussian elimination and matrix factorizations. Iterative procedures: Jacobi, Gauss Seidel, S.O.R. Solution of overdetermined linear systems by the Least-Squares method. Eigenvalues Approximation: The power method and the QR method. Solution of Nonlinear Equations: Iterative methods: bisection method, fixed-point iteration and Newton method for system of nonlinear equations. Zeros of polynomials. Approximation: Polynomial interpolation. Splines interpolation. Least-Squares approximation and data fitting. Numerical Integration: Newton-Cotes rules. Composite rules. Adaptive quadrature. The Solution of the Cauchy Problem for Ordinary Differential Equations: One step methods, Euler, trapezoidal rules and Runge-Kutta methods. Stability and convergence analysis. MATLAB software library.
