Course Description The course aims at presenting the physical processes occurring in gas flows around objects moving at high speed. In addition to the physical background, the mathematical and numerical modeling will be presented in order to cover the most significant flow regimes. Starting from the fundamental concepts of an atomistic description of gases, the essential background related to equilibrium statistical mechanics will be presented, followed by non-equilibrium models for roto-vibrational and chemical kinetic processes. The last part of the course will be devoted to rarefaction effects in the early phase of planetary entry flows and to radiation transport in gases.
