Course Title SWITCHING AND ROUTING
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course addresses the study of switching and routing systems through a methodological approach. The course also comprises hands-on experimental activity. Fundamental concepts about the internal architectures of routers and switches are given. The focus of the course is on the approaches and methodologies used to carry out the functions of switching and routing of traffic flows within that equipment. Switching theory is explained to understand the most common interconnection structures. Efficient algorithms for address look-up, packet-flow classification and buffering management are presented. The new switching architectures based on the Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm are then introduced and compared with the traditional implementations. Basic concepts related to network operation and control are provided. A set of SDN use-cases are introduced, which will be the basis to develop student's projects, as well as the tools required for this activity. Experimental activity is carried out both autonomously by students and in the lab, under the supervision of tutors. Such activity becomes the basis to develop the final project. One credit of this course will be offered as innovative teaching in the form of active classroom activities, blended classroom and flipped classroom (also including the experimental activity).
