Course Description Metal lattice, polycrystalline metals. Point defects: vacancy, interstitials, substitutional atoms, solid solutions. Line defects: dislocations, interactions among dislocations, microstructural barriers, substructures. Surface defects: grain boundaries, grain growth laws. Diffusion in metals: Ficks laws, diffusion mechanisms. Phase diagrams for metal alloys: fundamentals on phase diagrams, ternary diagrams, the Fe-C phase diagram for steels and irons. Thermal treatments: phase transformations, TTT and CCT curves for austenite transformations in steels, non-equilibrium structures in steels, industrial treatments. Mechanical tests and properties of metals and alloys: nsile test, hardness, impact test, toughness and brittleness, fatigue. Introduction to steelmaking and to main metal working techniques. Metallurgy and properties of the main classes of steel and cast irons.
