Course Description Aim of the course is to provide a deep knowledge of the microscopic phenomena underlying the operation of electronic devices. The course consists of a first stage, aimed at introducing of quantum mechanics fundamentals and at illustrating the band theory for crystalline solids, and a second part aimed at studying the statistics of state population and the transport in metals and semiconductors. The electrical properties of semiconductors, including doping and conduction properties of semiconductors, transport processes (drift and diffusion), generation and recombination mechanisms, impact ionization and tunneling, are covered. The course include laboratory sessions for apprehending numerical techniques for computing wavefunctions of carrier and the associated transport in semiconductor devices.
