Course Description Basic concepts of thermodynamics: introduction: thermodynamic systems, equilibrium states, processes. The First Law of thermodynamics: application to closed and open systems. The Second Law of thermodynamics: statements and irreversibility. Direct and indirect thermodynamic cycles. Outline of humid air thermodynamics. Heat transfer: Outlines of fluid dynamics. Heat transfer mechanisms and typical dimensionless groups Conduction, convection (natural and forced convection) and radiation (outline). Heat exchangers. Basic concepts of Machines: Mass conservation. Euler equation and machine efficiency. Hydraulic machines. Similarity of turbomachines. Cavitation. Gas compressors. Stage of axial multistage turbines. Large size steam turbines. Power plants: introduction: classification, consumption and reserves of energy sources. Steam power plants: thermodynamic cycles, plant schemes and operation. Gas-turbine power plants: thermodynamic cycles, plant schemes and operation. Combined cycles. Cogeneration plants (outline).
