Course Description Reminders of solid state physics and of physical metallurgy: defects in crystals, plastic deformation, creep. Irradiation in general, irradiation by energetic neutrons: collisional cascades. The evolution of microstructure of irradiated metals: point defects, their mobility, their aggregation, the interaction with dislocations. The macroscopic effects: creep, growth, swelling, embrittlement. The properties of ceramic nuclear fuels, their dependence on temperature, the effects of irradiation. Mechanisms of structural modification under irradiation with energetic electrons, neutrons, ions: Phase stability of irradiated metals and ceramics (elastic and inelastic regime). Glass transition; GFA criteria. Experimental probes of structural disorder. Short and medium range order; clusters. Nanocrystalline materials and nanoglasses: synthesis and behaviour under irradiation.
