Course Title MATERIALS FOR ENERGY
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 8.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course supplies to the students information and knowledge of the structural and functional materials typically used in the energy industry and of the of the phenomena that affect them during fabrication or service life, this latter frequently characterized by the presence of high or low temperatures and/or aggressive environments. The knowledge of such phenomena is fundamental both in the design step of components (including the identification of the optimal alloy and of the fabrication/heat treatment processes) and in the future controls of finished or serviced part. The main topics presented in the course are: the behaviour of materials (metals, ceramics and polymers) and their degradation phenomena occurring under the typical service conditions related to thermal and environmental effects, the different classes of structural and functional materials typically employed for different plant and component types, the control of material conditions before/during service. The course includes thematic lessons on materials and topics of particular interest and technical tours. A simple project on a particular combination of material class/degradation phenomenon/engineering application will be carried out individually during the course.
