Course Description This course introduces the concept of optical interconnects as a replacement for copper wiring in communication and electronic systems. It discusses why and how optical interconnects are becoming an essential alternative for future communication systems and their use inside electronic systems. The scope is also to understand the technology options for high speed optical interconnects, the advantages of each technology option and the expected evolution in these technologies. The course covers the main aspects of the optical interconnects, from the propagation in optical fibers to the major technological approaches to the devices and the integration with electronics.
