Course Title MATHEMATICAL METHODS AND MODELS [C.I.]
Course Type Integrated Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description 1. Optimization in function spaces. Functionals; Lagrangian; the first variation; estrema and estremals. Free optimization: Eulero-Lagrange equation; convexity. Optimization with constraints: Lagrange multipliers. Applications: minimum surface area of revolution; the brachistochrone problem; the catenary (hanging cable) problem; best production planning; minimum transit time of a boat; best control program of failures; optimal plan of consumptions. 2. Optimal control theory. Hamiltonian; estremal and optimal controls: the Pontryagin principle. Feedback controls; Bellman's equation. Applications: optimal maintenance policy for rental housing; optimized inventory plan; optimal plan of sale; maximum flight distance of a rocket plane in horizontal flight. 3. The rigid body model and deformable continua. A review of the balance equations for Statics and Dynamics; applications to systems of planar rigid bodies. The model of deformable continua. Mass conservation and continuity equation. Cauchy's stress. The balance equations for deformable continua and the constitutive laws. An introduction to Fluid Mechanics: the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. 4. The methods of Analytical Mechanics. Ideal constraints. The d'Alembert-Lagrange principle. The principle of virtual works and the stationarity of the potential. The dynamics of holonomic systems: the Lagrange equations; conjugate moments, generalized energy and their conservation. The Legendre transformation and the Hamilton equations.
