Course Title BIOINFORMATICS AND COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The simultaneous progress of information technologies and bio-nano-technologies, and their application to the study of biological phenomena, enabled the development of new disciplines such as Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, as well as the increasing growth of available biomolecular information and the widening of bio-medical-molecular knowledge, which are starting to be applied also in the healthcare field. The course aims to illustrate principles, technologies, methods and informatics instruments for the computational analysis, information content increment and interpretation of biological data produced by genome sequencing, proteomics and measurements of gene expression and cellular metabolic flows. It will be highlighted as the application to biological data of the engineering themes of data bases, information theory, data mining and others can contribute to the increasing of biomedical knowledge and a better health treatment. The course main objective is to give a systematic view of a multidisciplinary sector and to provide the base knowledge and instruments required to tackle various issues in computational biology and to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the recent bioinformatics development.
