Course Description Single phase convective heat transfer. Transport theorem. Differential balances of mass, momentum and energy. Boundary layer approximations. Turbulence. Dimensional analysis: heat transfer correlations for forced, free and mixed convection in a variety of configurations. Heat transfer with phase change. Filmwise and dropwise condensation. Convective condensation within pipes: flow pattern maps, heat transfer correlations. Analysis of a shell-and-tube condenser. Pool boiling: nucleation, Nukiyama curve, critical heat flux, heat transfer correlations. Flow boiling: subcooled boiling, saturated boiling, two phase flow regime, boiling suppression. Burnout: departure from nucleate boiling and dryout. Analysis of a once-through boiler.
