Course Title FOUNDAMENTALS OF BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND SPATIAL ORGANIZATION
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 6.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The main goal of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of building construction. The course highlights the fundamentals of building construction, the spatial organization principles, as well as the spatial organization of different building typologies in relation to technology, zoning and building code. The course will be organized around lectures on: 1. Key concepts for building design: - Meta-design as a design conceptual framework. From needs analysis to the definition of the spatial requirements and spatial units; - Architectural composition and arrangement of parts. Modules and space organization; - Building Elevations and Volumes; - Vertical and horizontal circulation in architecture, dimensioning and regulatory checks on accessibility by disabled persons and fire code; - Bioclimatic design principles: proper orientations of the building; relation with the surroundings and with the local climate to ensure conditions of thermal comfort inside. 2. Residential Typology: - Design of residential units: layout, dimension, local code requirement; - Classification of residential building architectural typologies. Residential typology comparison: multi-storey building, building/condominium with balcony access, apartment tower, terraced home, gallery house; - Flexibility and space modification in residential building. Flexibility design approach. Flexible architecture that responds to change and possible design solutions to respond to future potential changes; - Temporary housing; housing typologies for youth and for the elderly. Design principles and selected study cases. Building code requirements. 3. Analysis of selected building typologies. Design principles, functional layouts and building code requirements. Some selected building typologies and architectural issues will be deeply analyzed with special focus on the functional layouts and specific building technology, in particular: - Office buildings; - School buildings; - Cultural buildings; - Exhibition buildings. The Lab student's activities will be organized in teams of individuals with the aim of analyzing and investigating the distinguishing elements of selected buildings. Hence, students will learn how to work within a strong methodology and gain unifying architectural spatial qualities with engineering structural characteristics and regulatory constraints as well.
