Course Title ENGINEERING OF SOLAR THERMAL PROCESSES
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 8.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The teaching course aims at providing insight on the thermal processes involved in the conversion of solar radiation into useful thermal energy and explaining the mathematical models that allow characterizing the efficiency of solar thermal collectors and assessing the energy and economic performance of thermal systems. The main subjects covered are estimation of solar radiation availability, optical and thermal characteristics of solar collectors, applications of solar thermal energy for heating and cooling, solar thermal systems design and thermo-economic optimization methods. During the class, students are trained to design solar thermal systems and carry out, in groups of two or three, a project work consisting in the optimization of a solar plant and the analysis of its dynamics with the aid of numerical simulation tools.
