Course Description Introduction to light absorption and light scattering. Absorption and dispersion in dielectrics. Beer-Lambert law, attenuation and optical density. Absorption and scattering from a particle: Mie and Rayleigh theory. Single scattering approximation for a collection of particles. Radiative transfer theory for multiple scattering. Diffusion approximation. Scattering by fluctuations. Instrumentation for light scattering and light absorption measurements. Introduction to luminescence and photoluminescence. Perrin-Jablonski diagrams. Characteristics of fluorescence emission: Stokes shift, emisison spectra, lifetime, quantum yield. Fluorescence spectroscopy: measurments of spectra, measurement of lifetime in time domain and frequency domain. Instrumentation for fluorescence measurements. Effect of solvent, ambient, temperature, quenching, and anisotropy. Photochemical, effects, photothermal effects, photomechanical effects. Optical fluence and exposure time. Applications in Biomedicine and Nanotecnology.
