Course Description The course describes the Game Design field from a theoretical point of view, overviewing the main authors and topics of the discipline, and at the same time addresses the process of the design of games, leading the students along the iterative design process and the prototype development. During the semester the course explores the Games Studies discipline. The topics, among others, are: the origins; definitions, concepts and the principal authors; the difference between game, play and toy; the task and the ethical duties of the game designer; the analysis of the players and their relevant taxonomies; the game structure and fundamental traits; the main types of games; the importance of play for human beings as individuals and for society, looking at games from the more traditional concept to the most contemporary expressions.
