Course Description The course introduces foundations and applications of non-equilibrium thermodynamics for the neighborhood of equilibrium states, where we can assume a linear dependence of the fluxes of mass, momentum and energy on the generalized forces that cause them, as well as casting a first glance to the far-from-equilibrium states. Main topics: local equilibrium and local entropy production; linear phenomenological laws; Onsager reciprocal relations and symmetry principle; applications to mass and thermal diffusion, chemical reactions, electrokinetic phenomena; far-from-equilibrium systems; general properties of entropy production; the constructive role of irreversible processes.
