Course Description The course, starting from the basic knowledge on electromagnetics, provides a deeper analysis of the theoretical aspects of electromagnetic waves propagation in free space (wave functions, polarization), in stratified media (for plane waves only) and in guiding structures (guided waves and optical fibers). The concept of radiation is then introduced. The course deals also with Fourier optics and the scalar theory of diffraction (apertures and gratings). Gaussian beams in free space are then discussed. Finally, interference and space and time coherence of light is introduced, together with some examples on optical resonators and interferometers.
