Course Description Thermodynamic systems, state properties and equation, ideal and real gases, thermodynamic transformations. Specific heats. Energetic balance of closed and open systems, first and second law of Thermodynamics, irreversibility, Carnot cycle, absolute temperature, entropy. Entropic balance of closed and open systems. Pure substances, state diagrams, gas - vapor mixtures. Fundamental concepts on the direct and reverse cycles, air conditioning principles. Heat transfer: conduction, forced and natural convection, radiation. Heat exchangers.Production of thermal and cooling energy: boilers and steam generators, heat rejection, compression and absorption chillers. Machines: operational principles, similarity rules, types, design criteria, operational curves, cavitation, stall and surge. Power generation: steam power plants, gas turbines, combined cycles (thermodynamic cycle, plant configuration, components, performance, applications). Cogeneration of heat and power: definitions, energy savings, plant configurations, economic analysis. Emissions: gaseous pollutants, units of measure, abatement techniques.
