Course Description The aim of the course is to show the use of detailed mathematical modeling (that is model based on first principles in chemistry and physics) to simulate and understand chemical and biological processes. Kinetics of colloidal processes. Attractive and repulsive forces among charged colloidal particles. Population balance modeling of aggregation processes. Structure and characterization of the aggregates. The gel phase and kinetics of the gelation process. The role of fluodynamics in the aggregation and breakage processes in laminar and turbulent conditions. Kinetics of biological processes. Role and potential of farmacokonetics. Transport of a drug in the human body. Modeling of the drug delivery processes. Kinetics of enzimatic reactions. Kinetics of the cell growth process. Use of mammelian cells for the production of biologically active molecules (eg terapeutic proteins, antibodies). Fermentation reactors and purification processes.
