Course Description Purpose of the course is that of giving a brief description of some of the most relevant characterization techniques and to discuss the physical principles on which they are based in order to point out potentialities and limitations of each technique. A brief description of the experimental apparatus will be provided. Different levels of characterization (structural, morphological and compositional) will be considered. Contents: Introduction to characterization techniques Structural techniques: X-ray diffraction for 3D crystalline structure determination; surface structure: real vs. ideal surfaces, relaxation and reconstruction, low energy electron diffraction (LEED) Microscopy techniques: Fundamentals of optical microscopy; scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microanalysis; transmission electron microscopy (TEM) Compositional characterization : electron spectroscopies: XPS (ESCA), Auger; vibrational spectroscopy: infrared (absorption and reflection techniques ATR, RAIRS, DRIFT) and Raman spectroscopies
