Course Description Fundamentals of surface phenomena: thermodynamics of liquid surfaces, structure and thermodynamics of solid surfaces and interfaces, electric field effect. Gas interaction at surfaces: physical and chemical adsorption; porous solids, micron and nano-size powders; surface stability and growth; surface processes in electronics: epitaxy, oxidation, lithography, plasma etching, films deposition, diffusion, environmental interaction. Liquid-solid interaction: contact angle and wettability, adhesion at surfaces; surface stability and growth; silicon machining, interconnections in integrated and printed circuits. Interaction between solid surfaces: diffusion at interfaces; friction and wear, lubrication; sintering; surface stiction in MEMS, semiconductor devices (LED, solar cells, diodes); systems of reduced dimensionality: nanotubes, multilayers.
