Course Description The course aims to provide an introduction to the physics of soft materials, complex fluids, and biological systems. An overall survey of supramolecular systems and of the interaction forces between disperse particles is provided in the first unit (Unit B, standing for "Basics"), with specific applications to colloidal dispersions, macromolecular solutions, and polymer gels. In the second unit (Unit A, standing for "advanced"), the basic concepts developed in the first part of the course are applied to more complex soft materials like micellar solutions, surfactant emulsions, and biological fluids. A survey of the experimental techniques of major interests for the investigation of soft material is given, with lab demonstrations, in the last part of the course.
