Course Description Optimization of materials selection: overview of available materials for the production of components and machinery parts, method of optimal materials selection (Ashby charts). Design for purpose: design methodologies of components in relation to different component properties (lightness, stiffness, etc.). Non-linear mechanics of solids with FEM: principal solution algorithms and non-linear behaviour of materials, contact problems, large displacements and instability. Polymers: classification, visco-elastic behaviour, hyperelasticity, strength/crazing, elements on the fatigue resistance, numerical identification of the parameters of the material's models. Composite materials: reminder of elasticity of anisotropic materials, mechanical characterization, elastic (equivalent homogeneous material), static and fatigue strength, damage models, specific methods of numerical modelling (long and short fibre composites, laminates, sandwich panels) Assessment of the life cycle duration: life cycle assessment methods of components and products under uniaxial and multiaxial stress states, high and low cycle fatigue (HCF, LCF), elasto-plastic behaviour under cyclic loading (analytical and FEM), Fracture Mechanics (analytical and FEM), crack propagation due to fatigue. Advanced materials for the design of mechanical components: mechanical characterization, static and fatigue properties of sintered, light alloys, ceramic materials, smart materials.
