Course Description The aim of the course is to illustrate problems, methods and algorithms for complex systems, with special focus on nonlinear dynamics and on the networks of interacting systems. In the first module (Systems theory (nonlinear dynamics)) the fundamental properties of nonlinear dynamical systems are discussed, namely the asymptotic behaviours, from the simplest one (stationary) to those more and more complex (persistent oscillations, periodic or chaotic). Then, the transitions from one behaviour to another when parameters are varied (bifurcations, hysteresis, catastrophes) are analysed. In the second module (Complex systems and networks) the focus is on systems composed of many interacting units. Tools and methods for analysing complex networks are first discussed. Then, the role of the structure of the interactions on the overall dynamical behaviour is investigated (multi-agent systems, consensus and synchronization).
