Course Title INTRODUCTION TO MATERIALS SCIENCE (CHEMISTRY)
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description After a brief introduction of structural and functional materials, we describe the atomic structure and the periodic properties of the elements and the chemical bonds present in the various materials, including the ionic bond, the covalent bond in terms of molecular orbitals and the metallic bond. The intermolecular forces are then qualitatively introduced, and used to describe the liquid and solid state, including the crystalline and the amorphous solids, with a brief description of simple phase diagram with one or two components. Focussing on the specific chemical features, we then discuss the chemical structure and chemical bond present in typical materials: semiconductors, ionic and covalent ceramics, metals and metallurgical processes, polymeric materials, including rubbers and composite materials, conducting polymers and biomaterials.
