Course Description In many problems frequently encountered in engineering and science one has to estimate an unknown signal or an uncertain parameter. To this purpose, experimental data collected during a suitable experiment are processed. The aim of this course is to present the methods used for this transfer of the hidden information contained in data to the unknown. The basic technique is the Kalman filter, which is based on state space linear models and provides a recursive solution, suitable for real time implementation. The method is compared with other recursive estimation methods (RLS, etc.). Then the black box identification of state space models is studied. Finally, nonlinear identification methods are touched upon. The course is methodological in nature; however a significant test case from real data is presented.
