Course Title PHYSICS OF THE NUCLEUS + LABORATORY OF PHYSICS OF THE NUCLEUS [C.I.]
Course Type Integrated Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The course aims at developing an introductory but not elementary knowledge of nuclear physics, both at the theoretical and experimental level. The fundamental ideas behind the comprehension of the structure and properties of nuclei will be developed, starting from the basic interaction among their fundamental constituents, the nucleons. An essential part is then devoted to the presentation of some of the theoretical models developed to describe complex nuclei. Then, radioactive decays (in particular beta decay and weak interaction) and nuclear reactions will be treated, with particular attention to the physical topics of major interest for engineering applications. Moreover, the course aims at studying these issues by following an approach oriented to give a dynamical description of such processes, a classification and representation of radionuclides, an experimental demonstration of properties and behaviours described in the theory. Finally, the course foresees the introduction of fundamental concepts of radiation physics, especially of radiation dosimetry, through the definition of the main dosimetric quantities and the study of their use in the characterization and risk assessment of radiation fields.
