Course Description Continuous processes play a fundamental role in industrial engineering, from the simplest steam generation plants up to the most complex thermolectric power plants, from chemical processes to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The aim of the course is to develop a systems approach to control system design for such systems: starting from the analysis and understanding of the fundamental dynamics of a given plant, evaluate different control strategies, and finally design a complex control scheme, involving many sensor and control variables. To this purpose, advanced modelling of continuous processes (mass, momentum, and energy balance equations) are dealt with in the first part of the course. Subsequently, case studies are discussed, mainly taken from the field of power production and distribution.
