Course Description The course is an introduction to the leading Italian and international architectural developments from the second post-war period to the eighties, with a critical introduction on their necessary premises in the crucial debate on modernity which characterizes the first half of the XXth century, and with specific incursions in the complex architectural scenery of the last decades. The objectives of the course are to foster students' understanding of the relationship between architectural and urban forms and cultural, social and political systems and to promote students' ability to properly read the complex reality in which they are called to operate, providing methodological instruments of study and interpretation. The contents of the course are focused on the relationship between the architectural production and the architectural theoretical conceptions, on the articulations between architecture and the changing socio-political context, on the dialogue between architecture and urban scale, architecture and technological innovation, architecture and the visual arts, as well as on the communication strategies concerning design practises in recent years. The course will be structured on lectures ex cathedra according to historical chronology, though their content is driven by main thematic and contextual issues such as the crisis of modern movement, the passage to the postmodern phase connected to the complexity of the new practice dimensions and dynamics, the debate on new monumentalism, the responses to the question of dwelling, the debate on tradition, the legacy of the masters, the effects of globalization, etc. The course will also include several monographic seminaries based on the examination of significant case-studies concerning geographical regions which are normally less treated in current architectural surveys - as Portugal and Brazil - mainly intended at providing a critical consciousness of the complex interaction of cultural paradigms and of the modalities of migration of ideas and models in the contemporary age. Part of the lectures will be dedicated to parallel activities such as reading and discussion of texts, showing of multi-medial support to the didactic activity and guided visits to significant architectural examples related to the course's chronological framework. Eventual bibliographical work to be produced by the students will be agreed during the course with the student themselves.
