Course Description The aim of the course is to provide students with the keys to understanding both the urban transformations and the individual architectures, in their multiple implications. The course will be organized in two sections. The first, of a general nature, offers students a journey through the history of architecture and the western city from its roots in the classical Greek and Roman world, ending with the recovery of such roots done in the eighteenth century. This cycle of lessons will focus on: Greek, Roman, Paleochristian, Byzantine and Carolingian civil and religious architecture; Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance architecture - fifteenth and fifteenth centuries - and baroque in Italy and Europe; the eighteenth-century classicism in Italy and Europe, as well as the different way of conceiving the city and of intervening on it at the various historical thresholds analyzed; it will also put the accent on the economic-cultural situation of the companies in which the various interventions expressed the functional and representational needs, starting from the available techniques and materials. The second of a monographic nature will concern the architecture of the palazzo in Milan between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In this case the accent will be placed on the relationships: city and palace; client, architect and workers; family events and purchase and intervention campaigns. In addition to the more specifically architectural aspects, we will also investigate those relating to the distribution and use of the building, as well as to the methods of managing private shipyards. The course, held by the teacher with the participation of the collaborators, consists of ex-cathedra lessons on the individual themes of the program; there is also a study visit to the Milanese buildings, which will be discussed in the monographic section.
