Course Description The lessons will cover a wide time span, starting from antiquity to reach the threshold of the twentieth century, illustrating how the methods of use in architecture of some raw materials (earth, stone, wood) have been particularly long-lived in the history of architecture until to the industrialization of the building field. Materials, processing and laying techniques that, with their own peculiarities, intrinsic limits of resistance and application, as well as different availability and diffusion, have heavily conditioned architectural forms and finishes. The course will then examine the history of techniques and materials in relation to different cultures by age and geographical location, first focusing attention on the ancient world (and in this case on the Greek-Roman one) to orientate then on the technical and formal reinterpretation carried out in medieval and modern age, up to the results of the Industrial Revolution matured during the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century.
