Course Description The course will examine the dialogue between art, design and graphics in the Arts and Crafts movement, in Russian Constructivism, in Surrealist photography, and in Dadaistic photomontage, all the way down to the post-modern and contemporary works. In the general part, the focus will be on modern movements in art and design - de Stijl, Futurism, Dada, for example - that still represent the aesthetical and philosophical foundations of today's graphic design. More specifically, emphasis will be laid on the several moments where formal and theoretical innovations in art and graphic design have been integrated, thanks to the contribution of some personalities or the development of institutions (Bauhaus, the Ulm School, the Cranbrook Academy), from the end of the nineteenth centuty till the end of the twentieth century. The central phase of the course will shift from Italian and European modernism to the American context, with an in-depth examination of those implications that induced modernism to interact with consumer culture, showing in the process how the contradictions of modernist theory and practice have converged into post-modernism. During the two phases, some key figures are going to be examined monographically
