Course Title GENERATIVE DESIGN: GEOMETRIC AND NUMERICAL METHODS

Course Description The course aims at providing the students with the tools, both in mathematics and computer science, for the generation of images and objects, from the point of viewof the shape, the texture and the color. In this scope, the mathematical modelling of objects, their transformations and deformations has not only a purely descriptive purpose, but most of all a creative one since, thanks to shapes parametrization, one can easily explore many different possible realizations. The planning of the course relies on the students' knowledge of some basic concepts taught in the first year courses, such as the parametric representation of simple curves and surfaces, and matrix calculus. For the whole duration of the course lectures will be complemented by laboratory sessions where the students will use suitable rendering softwares. The estimated duration of the course is of 60 hours (6CFU), divided into lectures (35) and laboratory (25). The evaluation will be based on an oral exam and the discussion of a project developed by the student. The detailed program will include: 1. Recall on the concept of parametric curve and surface. 2. Recall on affine transformations. Non linear transformations. 3. Recall on the generation of dynamic surfaces. 4. Ruled surfaces. 5. Freeform surfaces: Beziér and their generalizations. 6. Subdivision surfaces and their application in computer graphic. 7. Blending of surfaces. 8. Boolean operations on solids. 9. Creation of 3D textures. 10. Mapping of patterns on parametric surfaces. 11. Color palette generation. 12. Notes on the construction of complex shapes: approximation of surfaces, the mathematics of 3D printing.
