Course Description The course intends to study the urban space as a key element towards understanding the current social context, focusing on global cities, and also to provide students with categories necessary for territory mapping. Teaching method uses lectures, examination of case studies, workshops and ethnographic walks. COURSE CONTENT - Urban sociology: origins, developments and comparison of theories. - Techniques for mapping resources and territory requirements. - Processes of perception and symbolism of urban places. - Culture and territory: a comparison between different cities (Barcelona - Nairobi - Sarajevo). - The effects of globalisation on the urban space: the phenomenon of migration. - Development of the environment compared to issues and questions posed by sustainability in the global cities. - From industrial cities in the northern hemisphere to global cities: urban and suburban development. The case of slum cities. - Milan like european city. - City, citizenship and participation: the role of civilised societies in an urban context.
