Course Description Thermodynamics. Fundamentals: basic definitions, internal energy, entropy, equilibrium states, entropy axioms, fundamental equation, the first law, thermodynamic potentials. Thermodynamics of the stable equilibrium states. Quasi-static processes. Single-component systems: homogeneous states, ideal and real gases, liquids and solids; two-phase states and first order phase transitions; triple point; state diagrams. Multicomponent systems: phase rule. Processes and thermodynamic engines. Reversibility. The fluid motion: energy and entropy analysis. Cycles and power systems. Refrigeration and heat pumps. Multicomponent ideal gases, gas-vapour mixtures, moist air, psychrometry, air conditioning. Heat transfer. Generalities on heat transmission mechanisms. Definition of thermal conductivity and convection coefficient. Heat conduction: Fourier postulate, heat diffusion equation in general form. Steady and unsteady heat conduction: initial and boundary conditions. Electrical analogy and equivalent nets. Convection: Newton law. Generalities on motion of fluids: laminar and turbulent regimes, Reynolds number, friction factor. Forced and free convection: characteristic nondimensional groups and correlations. Radiation: characteristic properties and physical laws. Heat transfer between black surfaces: view factors. Heat exchange between gray surfaces: equivalent electrical nets.
