Course Description Course topics 1) Soil-structure reactions for applied displacements of vertically embedded systems at serviceability and ultimate limit states. Design of R/C, P/C and FRC piles subjected to axial loads and bending moments. 2) Soil-structure reactions for applied displacements of horizontally embedded systems at serviceability and ultimate limit states. Hydraulic intervention measures for hazard mitigation: superficial and deep draining systems (trenches). Analysis and design of embedded pipes: pipelines, vertical hollow piles. 3) Deformation response of the soils in horizontal excavations: mechanical identification, diagnosis and operative check. Analysis and design of underground structures: prefabricated tunnels and box culverts. 4) Evaluating the triggering of a landslide through the Limit Equilibrium Approach: methods of slices (Fellenius, Bishop, Janbu, Morgenstern and Price, Spencer). Structural intervention measures for hazard mitigation: hybrid methods for designing active and passive protective structures (anchored retaining walls, slope stabilizing piles, earth reinforced embankments). Advanced numerical approaches for evaluating the propagation of a landslide: DEM and SPH methods. Analysis and Design of structures interacting with soil: ground anchors, sheet-piles, retaining walls, advanced retaining devices. 5) Dynamic and impulsive loads: (a) simplified Newmark method applied to the stability assessment of a rock slab during earthquake loading; (b) rockfall impact on sheltering structures. Design of sheltering structures under impact loading.
