Course Description 1. Natural risks and catastrophes under an historical perspective and accounting for global trends. 2. Extreme value theory and application (EV) and analysis of natural hazards (floods, storms and droughts; earthquakes and volcanic eruptions; winds; sea levels and highest sea waves) 3. Simulation techniques for design (statistical experiments, simulation of design alternatives and optimal design, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis). 4. Risk and reliability analysis (measures of reliability, multiple failure modes, uncertainty in reliability assessments, temporal reliability and survival time, hazard function, and reliable life). 5 Civil protection methods: a. general framework and field of study; b. risk, vulnerability and resilience; c. preparedness; emergency management; post-disaster recovery; d. civil protection in Italy and Europe; e. multi-hazard and hazard-specific risk analysis, risk evaluation and risk reduction strategies; f. civil protection plans; g. damage management and losses evaluation and adjustment; insurance and reinsurance; h. post-disaster recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction. 6. Seminar on water resources systems sensitivity to climate fluctuations.
