Course Description The course will focus mainly on water and wastewater treatment process operation, diagnosis of process faults and their remedial actions, as well as the analysis and evaluation of operational, performance and sustainability indicators. The Course aims at providing students with the following skills: a) characterise water and wastewater; b) evaluate operational performances of treatment trains of drinking water and wastewater plants; c) provide theoretical and practical indications on monitoring tools, such as sensors, biomass activity measurements, evaluation of operational, performance and sustainability indicators. In particular, the Course will deal with the following topics, by focusing on process operation rather than design: water and wastewater characterisation; preliminary and primary treatments; biological treatments; sludge treatment and disposal; operation of water and wastewater treatment plants: performance, management and environmental sustainability indicators, fault detection, remedial actions. Future of wastewater treatment: innovation and sustainability.
