Course Description The course aims to provide basic knowledge regarding noise and electromagnetic pollution, adopting both a theoretical and an applied approach and considering technical standards and the current legislation, too. Part 1 - "Noise pollution" - Sound and sound pressure, wave equation, Equivalent Continuous Sound Level (Leq), Sound Exposure Level (SEL), frequency spectra. Sound perception: A-weighting curve, hearing disorder and damage, psychoacoustics. Propagation of sound in free field, tools and measurement techniques. Industrial sources of noise, roadway, rail and aircraft noise and related computational models. Legislation, acoustic climate and noise impact, zoning, mapping, plans for noise mitigation, noise control in outdoor places, houses and places of work. Part 2 - "Electromagnetic pollution" - Reference to electromagnetism, electric and magnetic field, propagation of electromagnetic waves. Sources of radio frequency (RF), models for the estimation of the field, tools and RF measurement techniques. Sources of industrial frequency (ELF), models for the estimation of the field, tools and ELF measurement techniques. Interaction of ELF and RF radiation with the body, specific absorption rate (SAR). Legislation, impact assessment, electromagnetic mitigation and control in outdoor places, houses and places of work.
