Course Description The course illustrates the basic principles of modern telecommunication systems and networks, and it is organized in two parts. The first one (Signal and Systems for Telecommunications) presents the basic concepts for signal analysis and representation. Moreover the basic principles used for the design of digital communication systems are illustrated. The second part of the course (Telecommunication Networks) is devoted to the presentation of the characteristics and peculiarities of modern telecommunication networks. Signal and Systems for Telecommunication Introduction to communication systems: system model, sources of information and signals. Classification of signals. Fourier analysis. Sampling theorem. Impulse response and frequency response of a linear time-invariant system. Decibel. Fundamentals of probability and random processes. Autocorrelation and power spectral density. Transmission of a random process through a linear time-invariant system. The additive white Gaussian noise in communication systems. Analog to digital conversion (Pulse Code modulation): sampling, quantization and encoding. Baseband pulse transmission: matched filter, error rate due to noise, intersymbol interference, Nyquist criterion, multilevel transmission. Passband digital transmission: transmission model, coherent amplitude or phase or frequency shift keying, quadrature amplitude modulation schemes. Characteristics of communication channels. Multiple-access techniques. Examples of transmission systems. Telecommunication Networks Telecommunication Networks and Services: telecommunication network topologies, architectures, and functions; circuit-switching and packet-switching networks; time division multiplexing; the OSI reference model. Data Networks: data link layer, error detection and data link control protocols; statistical multiplexing; Multiplexing (PDH, SDH); digital switches; Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN); Multiple access systems. Local Area Networks: Ethernet and Token Ring local networks. Internet: the network-layer protocol (IP); transport-layer protocols (TCP, UDP).
