Course Title ADVANCED DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 6.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The course starting from some examples of transmission systems and of their components underlines the importance of correct selection and application of machine elements. In a first part of the course the main machine elements will be presented or studied with more depth for those that have already been introduced in previous courses. In particular the following machine elements will be considered: threaded joints, pins, springs, rolling and journal bearings, shaft, axles, shaft-hub fits. These elements will be described in a systematic way, which encompasses design solutions, design, application, tolerances, assessment with respect to the main failures. Then spur and helical gears will be presented, with the necessary review of geometry and kinematics, and with a focus on the main failures like tooth root fatigue, pitting, micropitting, scuffing and wear. Finally some transmission systems, based on both ordinary and planetary gearboxes, will be considered and on them the students will practice on the analysis of power flows, force and moment balance, losses, efficiency. Numerical examples and laboratories will provide occasions to apply theoretical lectures. The course is completed by a technical visit of the gear research center FZG of the Technische Universität München and of a company in Germany to be defined.
