Course Description Description of the bridge structure. Various types of structures: slab, girder and box-girder bridges, truss bridges, arch bridges, cable-stayed bridges. Various methods of construction: cast-in-place, precast (reinforced or prestressed concrete, composite steel) girders; prestressed segmental bridges; launched bridges. Highway and railway bridge design loads. Influence lines and their application in structural analysis and design. Bridge deck analysis. Use of influence surfaces and of approximate methods. Reinforcement and detailing of concrete slabs. Bridge girder Analysis of orthotropic plates. Girder bridges transversally stiff: general solution; Engesser-Courbon method. Single box-girder bridges. Multicell box-girder bridges: Unger's method. Simply supported, continuous and Gerber bridges. Analysis and design of shear connectors, cross frames and diaphragms, corbels (halving joints) and pier caps. Types of bearings (elastomeric, sliding, pot, etc.), their use and the computation needed. Expansion joints. Piers and slender piers. Abutments. Thermal stresses. Limit analysis. Construction and erection considerations. Arch bridges. Static problems. Maillart type bridges. Reinforced concrete shell roofs. Membrane theory of cylindrical shells: circular parabolic, hyperbolic and catenary directrix. The beam method. Bending theory for circular cylindrical shells. ASCE method. Membrane theory of double-curved shells: paraboloid of revolution, hyperbolic-paraboloid. Limit analysis of concrete shell roofs. Analysis of sferical domes. Geckeler's approximation. Finite element analysis. Dome/ring-wall system. Concrete tanks. Folded plate structures. Analysis of helicoid and curved beams. Tension roof structures and double cable-stayed bridges.
