Course Title DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS - STUDIO
Course Type Laboratory
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 12.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description The studio aims at introducing first-year students to the design issues through critical contributions and training: cycles of lectures and hands-on training will introduce the ratio, method and design tools. The cycle of integrated lectures are a further introduction to the culture and practice of the project and to design methodology This course is a basic introduction to conceptual and manual skills that represent necessary steps in design skills evolution. Students develop and strengthen their capabilities by completion of several processes and exercises. Critical thinking and concept generation is a primary focus, drawing and model making activities may be integrated to establish this process. The course's primary concern is to foster strategies for dealing with product form, function and use via observation techniques. To then apply these techniques to the solution of a design problem and its resolution through a process of design. This course is also an introduction to the understanding of the principles of product design. Students may approach form, function and use construction and will understand the process of design through the study of manufactured designed objects. Finally, through designing low-tech products, students will learn abilities from solving the observed problems to constructing a prototype as a final result. Each project is a process of problem-solving within its own constraints. Discussions will be held to explore problem definition, ideation, judgment, conceptualization. Various model making techniques may be taught and employed to realise design intentions. As a further aim this course is designed to enable students to better recognise, critique and discuss, using appropriate vocabulary, academic tone and register, design theory and methodology; with particular focus on industrial design practice, while developing capabilities in gathering evidence, critical analysis and presenting complex ideas and concepts both orally through presentation and through design working tools.
