Course Description The unit introduces to the plurality and articulation of approaches related to the design of transformations of the city and urban space, the development of the town-planning discipline and some basic aspects of history of architecture. A first set of lectures, moving from general notions on the organization of urban settlements in the ancient world and in the modern age, focuses on the consideration of some relevant cases and problems of city transformation between the XVth and the XVIIIth century. The second part of the course will invite the student to explore and put in a historical context - through general overviews and the investigation of some case studies - places and fundamental stages of the European and American culture and experiences in terms of town planning and territory planning, between the second half of the 19th century and the whole 20th century period.
