Course Description This course deals with energy efficiency in construction and the related evaluation tools. Architecture with low environmental impact is a particularly actual topic because of recent evolutions in the field (energy rating and reduction of allowable consumption limits) and because of the innovation roadmap required to reach the European goal of nearly zero energy buildings in 2020. Classes will thus present this specific aspect of the environmental compatibility of buildings, and in particular: - state of the art about use of resources and energy efficiency in the construction sector; - laws, standards and voluntary labels in force, or available, today and the related design strategies; - analysis of existing trends and legislative outlook at short / medium term; - presentation of significant case studies and prototypes of nearly zero energy buildings. The studio work is an integral part of the programme. Their aim is to give students the ability to predict energy performance and comfort conditions in buildings with advanced energy simulation tools. Performance levels for the assignments will be derived from international low energy standards.
